Medical Emergencies and After-Hours Care

Medical Emergencies

In the event of an on-campus medical emergency with threat to life or limb dial 911 immediately and notify Campus Police (504)520-7490. State the condition of the person and the exact location. If you are in a residence hall, please notify a staff person immediately.

Urgent Care & After-Hours Medical Care

If your problem is not a critical emergency but you need assistance, choose one of the following options:

  • Student Health Services medical staff is available Monday – Thursday 8:30AM - 4:30PM and Friday 8:30AM - 4:00PM to all enrolled Xavier students. Students are seen by appointments; however, any emergency will take precedence over an appointment.
  • On Campus - After hours, weekend, holidays - notify Campus Police and the residence hall manager on duty.
  • Go to the nearest Urgent Care for Services
  • Call or go to a private physician of your choice.

Off-Campus Transportation

  • Transportation, if necessary, is available to an off-campus medical facility by cab or ambulance. Any fees incurred are the responsibility of the student in any situation.

On-Campus Transportation

  • A student who is ill or injured and is unable to get to Student Health Services on their own may call the clinic @ (504)520-7396 or Campus Police @ (504)520-7490 for transportation assistance. Campus Police will transport a nurse to the site and transport the nurse and student back to Student Health Services clinic. This service is reserved only for situations where the student is unable to ambulate and too ill to make it to SHS on their own.

For emergencies, call or go to one of the following hospital emergency rooms, open 24 hours daily:

*Any expenses incurred as a result of medical care obtained off-campus (regardless of hospital), including ambulance service, are your responsibility.

Students who require follow-up care after an emergency room visit are encouraged to check with their insurance plan for their specific referral process prior to receiving care by a community provider.
