Department of Mass Communication

The mass communication major offers students a wide liberal arts background and a core of communications courses that prepare students for either graduate school or positions in the media industry. Mass Communication majors follow a curriculum designed to allow students to concentrate in one of two areas of mass communication: multimedia, public relations, or strategic communication.

Students primarily interested in broadcasting may prepare video projects in the department's television studio for cablecast over XTV and become members of X Radio. Those who wish to pursue careers in print media can earn valuable experience on the Xavier Herald, the only student newspaper from a Historically Black College that is a member of the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame. Students also have the opportunity to complete internships at media outlets such as a radio or television station, newspaper, magazine, or an advertising or public relations agency. Students are expected to compile a portfolio for use in their job search following graduation.

The faculty is committed to assisting students in developing the professional skills and values necessary for successful careers in mass media-related fields, as well as acquiring a foundation of general knowledge and developing critical thinking abilities. Faculty members work to ensure that skills courses meet current industry standards. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in internships and gain professional experience through traditional coursework, such as service-learning projects, practicums, and projects involving media or public relations organizations.

Mass Communication majors must earn a C or better in all required courses, including English core courses. They must pass a comprehensive exam. If they repeat more than two required courses, they will be advised to change their major.
Strategic Communication/Public Relations Concentration, B.A.

Strategic Communication/Public Relations Concentration, B.A.

Mass Communication majors take core courses in their freshman and sophomore years. In their sophomore year, they declare an area of concentration (multimedia or strategic communication/public relations) and follow that program until graduation.

The curriculum consists of six courses totaling 16 credit hours, 6 courses, and 16 credit hours. 3-4 online, including required courses. 1 in-person. 6-9 months to complete.

Mass Communication Minor

The Mass Communication minor requires 18 hours of coursework, including MSCM 1100, MSCM 2030, and MSCM 2222, plus 9 hours of electives from MSCM courses.
